OVERVIEW: The Saab Torped 47 (SLWT) is a Swedish-designed lightweight torpedo introduced in 2020, intended for anti-submarine and surface warfare. It combines wire-guided mid-course control with active/passive acoustic homing, optimized for littoral operations.

DETAILS: “Torped 47” follows Saab’s prior lightweight torpedo series; SLWT stands for Saab Lightweight Torpedo. It is 2.85 m long, 400 mm diameter, weighs approximately 340 kg, and carries a 50 kg PBX warhead. Propulsion is via a lithium-based rechargeable battery driving a pump-jet for speeds over 40 kn and ranges ≥20 km (>1 hour), with future capability for ≥50 km. Guidance includes dual-mode active/passive sonar and galvanic wire (with future fibre-optic option); fully digital processing supports multiple-target discrimination. Developed from Torpedo 45 lineage, Torped 47 features modular design (switchable warhead/exercise modules) and enhanced shallow-water performance, entering Swedish service in December 2022 and Finnish service by late 2023.

TYPE: Lightweight ship/air/submarine-launched active/passive acoustic homing torpedo

FUNCTION: Launchable from surface ships, submarines, helicopters, or aircraft, it uses wire-guided mid-course updates and transitions to acoustic homing in terminal phase to pursue subs and small surface targets with high maneuverability in littoral waters.

NOTE:
IOC: December 2022 (Sweden); Finnish IOC late 2023
Manufacturer: Saab Dynamics, Sweden
Operators: Sweden; Finland
Platforms: Surface ships (Visby-, Göta-class corvettes), Swedish submarines (Gotland-, Blekinge-class), Finnish Hamina-class and Pohjanmaa-class vessels
